Meaning of Nyepi Day in Bali

Nyepi in Bali

Nyepi is a Hindu holiday that is celebrated each new year saka, which this year falls on March 23. It is a day of purification for the universe.Nyepi means quiet or silent, and celebrated every 1 year saka. And this year is the year of Saka 1934. At Nyepi should not be doing such activities in general, as out of the house (except the sick and needs treatment), turn on lights, etc. work let alone gamble.
And the goal is to create a quiet atmosphere, devoid of the hustle bustle of life and devoid of all passion or greed of human nature to purify Bhuwana
Agung (universe) and Bhuwana Alit (human).

Melasti Ceremony

Nyepi Day, especially in Bali has several stages. Starting from the Melasti ceremony, mecaru, and Pengerupukan. This was followed by a peak of Nyepi itself. And lastly Ngembak Geni.
Melasti, mecaru, and Pengerupukan.
The ceremony called Melasti or Melis be held a few days before Nyepi. At this time everything or the means praying in ostensibly brought the sea to be purified.
Mecaru or be referred Tawur, held on Tilem Sasih Kesange (Month die to 9) the day before Nyepi. A ceremony held in any home or family, village, district, and so on. By making offerings targeted at Bhuta Kala or can be called negative things that will not interfere in people's lives.
Pengerupukan conducted shortly after mecaru, is to create a flame or torch to torch the house, rang the gong to make noise. So expect the Bhuta Kala get out of our environment. At the village level held processions Ogoh-ogoh Bhuta Kala is a manifestation of the negative properties. Paraded around the village then burned, the goal for the negative things that smell was gone and did not interfere with human life.

At the time of Nyepi in Bali in particular, all in a state of quiet. There is no activity as usual, because at that time held Catur Brata Penyepian consisting of:
Amati Geni, which may not use or start a fire.
Observe work, that should not work.
Observe lelungan, ie not traveling.
Observe lelanguan, that does not do the entertainment.

So that it can be said Nyepi day meaning Purgatory (humans) and the universe. Throw away any dirt or anything negative in the distant past to welcome the new year (saka). And start the new year with something new, something positive of course. New zeal for life hereafter.
Atmosphere of Nyepi in Bali

Ngembak Geni.

Geni Ngembak which fell the day after Nyepi implemented by organizing visits between families and neighbors and acquaintances. Mutually forgive each other by holding Tat Twam Asi principle is "I was you and you are me". The position we are equal before God, even though we are of different religions or beliefs we should live in harmony and peace always.
Thus some idea about the meaning of Nyepi in Bali in particular. Hopefully perayaanya this year went smoothly, although excursions both local and foreign tourists come to Bali is crowded. Because there are few tourists who came to enjoy the festivities or know the situation Nyepi in Bali.
